Unable to turn it off - very wasteful! November 8, 2008 I liked these scales at first, particularly the fact that you can put your own mixing bowl on the scale and reset the scale to zero for each ingredient. But - the inbuilt clock/timer is permanently on - the only way to stop it is to removed the battery, and as the catch on the battery compartment looks pretty feeble, that wouldn't be an option for long, as well as being a pain to bother. So why is this so annoying? Well, the battery is one of those little round ones that you can't just pick up in the supermarket, and as it runs out after a few months, you will be replacing it pretty often. I had a look on the web, and they cost from 50p each (if you buy 10 of them in one go) to 2! This is a silly waste of money, and just adds to the mountain of batteries that we throw away every year. And who wants a clock on their scales? I already have one on the oven, the microwave, the kitchen wall ... etc. I don't need yet another clock wasting power and having to be reset twice a year! If Salter must include a clock, then there should be an off switch. My Salter scales are now at the back of the cupboard, and I have reverted to my balance scales.
OK, but only lasted 8 months July 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this scale in October 2007 and it worked perfectly until May 2008. For the first 6 months we were delighted with it. Hairline cracks appeared in the supplied bowl in April '08 and have got gradually bigger and bigger (bowl not dropped or abused in any way). We can still use it, but obviously not for liquids. You can use any other bowl, but the supplied bowl makes it easier to read the display as it's transparent ( a bowl or plate on the top of the weighing platform can cover the read-out). Since May the display has been difficult to re-set. Press the re-set button and it just displays four dashes. At first it would reset with one or two further presses on the button. However, now we're having to press it several times to get it to zero and some of the time it will display a random number or the dreaded four dashes for AGES. Time to get a new one! Not an expensive scale but should last longer than 8 months in my opinion. Also, the display returns to the time after a while (it's supposed to do this but it's the one feature I dislike), which is very annoying when you have a lot of things to weigh and the re-set button isn't working properly!
Seemed like a perfect set of scales until recently... May 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've recently become an avid cake baker and was looking for some good, accurate scales that wouldn't take up too much room in my cupboard. These Salter scales met my needs exactly. They have a digital face that tells the time when the scales are 'asleep' and they are incredibly easy to use - just zero the scale and start weighing! Very user friendly and very small and neat.
Update - the plastic bowl of these scales has suddenly become 'pockmarked' and dented and seems completely ruined. There seems to be no obvious cause of this - they've only been used to weigh dry ingredients and washed up by hand. Not very happy - will need to purchase a new bowl, if not new scales.
Great value - count down timer is tricky November 17, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Good size bowl, very easy to set up and use. Nothing to fancy, but does the job.
Excellent set of scales July 20, 2007 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
Excellent set of scales. Especially if you bake and need to weigh each ingredient to its precise gram/ounce. It's easy to reset the the scales to 0g/oz while you pour in the next item. You can opt to use the plastic bowl it comes with, or simply prop your mixing bowl (like I do) and throw in the butter/sugar/flour etc. A very handy buy!
